The Pathfinder, or The Inland Sea is a historical novel by James Fenimore Cooper first published in 1840. It is the fourth novel featuring Natty Bumppo, his fictitious frontier hero, and is considered as forming the third chronological episode of the Leatherstocking Tales.

I read the book because I live in the vicinity which is covered in it. I find Cooper's writing style somewhat quaint and interesting. However, I wonder if he didn't use verbosity to cover for the lack of plot. I'm not sure if the book would be of interest if it were not for the geographic connection. Also, Cooper's tales seem to cover incredible distances in very short times. I'd have to agree with Mark Twain regarding Cooper.Product details

Very good reading. I enjoy reading any book by the author James Fenimore Cooper. I gave it 5 stars because I read it on my tablet at night(s), while in bed until completed. The characters were like old friends to me. Very descriptive, and the plot was contemporary to the period of life at that time that the author wrote about.
This book is a misleading. It is not a hard back printed copy of The Pathfinder, but a photocopy of a previously issued edition stuck with some hardbacks on. Much of the print is hard to read because it is a photocopy. I paid a high price for a photocopy work. Probably put together in China. Stay away from cheap Chinese crap.
The Pathfinder was full of history and suspense. I love the James Fenimore Cooper books. After I read The Pathfinder, I donated it to our Public Library in Newport, TN. They had all the Leatherstocking Tales but the Pathfinder. They were very exciting about getting it. They looked all over the State with other libraries and could not find a single copy to add to their collection.
I have read The Last of the Mohicans and The Deer Slayer from this series. These books as well as Pathfinder are good, classic adventure stories and are fun to read. However, while the locations of these stories are different it seems that much of the dialogue is the same. In many ways Mr. Cooper wrote the same story repeatedly while changing the sitting.
If a reader wishes to know something or something more about Romanticism in America's Romantic age, read The Pathfinder and almost any of Poe's short stories. If one also wishes to read American literature of the highest water, look beyond Cooper and Poe to Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Melville and Mark Twain.
This is the third book in the same series that inspired the popular Daniel Day-Lewis movie "The Last of the Mohicans". It is at its core an adventure story about the American frontier in the decades before the American revolution. There are loyal friendships and traitors, battles and romance.
The story centers around one of the Great Lakes, at this point disputed by the English and the French. The Pathfinder and his native friend/brother Chingachgook are aiding the English in the struggle. They are given the task of escorting Mabel, an officer's daughter, to the English fort. Much of the book revolves around Pathfinder's doomed love for Mabel and how her presence affects the events taking place around her.
The only obvious technical problem with the story is Cooper's tendency for abruptly switching between breathless action and drawn-out monologues, most of them courtesy of the Pathfinder. This particular flaw made it difficult to stay focused on the story, and I found myself frequently skimming through these passages.
For fans of the movie if you are expecting the books to be similar to the film, you will be disappointed. I enjoyed both the movie and the books, but they are quite different from each other. Significant story lines were changed in the movie. I would recommend reading the Leatherstocking Tales to those who watched "The Last of Mohicans", but this is something to be aware of.
'Pathfinder' is overall an exciting adventure, one I look forward to reading aloud to my children. I recommend it both as a good read and as a historical glimpse of how Americans once romanticized the frontier conflicts.
I had liked Daniel Day Lewis in last of the Mohicans. This tale is set afterward and while the protagonist is of the same character, the situation is different. I had chosen it because it was in the same vein and by the same author. The characters, especially the hero and his comrades, are to be admired and typical of a more ideal view of human nature. Fans of adventures will like it as well as those of a slightly more romantic view. For myself, the only drawback is that it is occasionally wordy and slightly idealistic.
